There’s more than one way to Save the Cat!

Abstract

When proposed for SUF, this project entailed a student studying the publishing market, finding trends, writing a MG book that utilized her trend-research, creating agent materials for querying, maintaining a blog that taught others how to do the same, and (if the student could not complete all listed items within the 7-week SUF time period) she would explain where she failed and how others could learn from her mistakes. Market research revealed that a #ownvoices contemporary fantasy story with STEM elements could be successful in the current MG market. Save the Cat! Writes a Novel guided the creation of the new book’s plot to increase marketability. The student succeeded at gathering 14 months of market research data, writing a first draft of her manuscript, revising half of her manuscript, writing and revising a synopsis, maintaining a blog that followed her process, and writing an explanation of her failure.
